Healthy Cooking Your Kids Will Love

October 22, 2022 , date suppliers, Healthy Foods

Getting kids to eat something other than white rice and nuggets usually comes down to one thing: what’s actually on the plate has to taste good first, be “healthy” second. Kids don’t negotiate on flavour. Here’s a handful of dishes that work because of that, not despite it.

Start with what’s already sweet

Dates are one of the easiest wins in a kids’ kitchen — see our healthy foods picks for more everyday ideas. They’re naturally sweet, soft enough for small teeth, and sticky enough to bind things together without needing sugar or syrup. Pit a handful of soft Medjool or Mariami dates, blend them with rolled oats and a spoon of peanut butter, and you’ve got a no-bake energy ball kids can help roll themselves. Ten minutes, no oven, no mess that doesn’t wipe off a counter.

Sneak the vegetables into the sauce, not the plate

Most kids won’t eat a vegetable they can see and name. They’ll eat a bolognese. Grate carrot and courgette fine enough that they melt into a tomato sauce while it simmers — twenty minutes, stirred in with the mince. The sauce still tastes like bolognese. That’s the whole trick.

Bread and fruit, cut differently

Same peanut butter sandwich, but sliced into strips instead of triangles, plated next to a row of banana coins and stoned dates. Kids eat with their eyes before their mouths — a plate that looks like a small buffet gets picked at longer than one big sandwich half. Add two or three chopped dates to porridge or overnight oats the night before; they soften in the liquid and give you sweetness without a sugar spoon in sight.

Let them build it themselves

A “make your own” wrap station — soft tortilla, shredded chicken, grated cheese, cucumber sticks, a small bowl of chopped dates for sweetness — turns dinner into an activity instead of a negotiation. Kids eat more of what they assembled themselves, even the bits they’d normally push to the side of the plate.

Keep a stocked drawer

The fastest way to lose the healthy-snack battle is having nothing ready when hunger hits. A drawer with whole dates, a box of raisins, and cut-up fruit beats an empty one every time — it’s not about willpower, it’s about what’s within arm’s reach at 4pm. If you’re buying in bulk, our date suppliers page lists what’s currently in stock.

None of this needs a recipe book. Start with one dish this week — the energy balls are the easiest first attempt — and build from there.
