Low-Fat Raw Vegan – A Diet Within A Diet Plan?

March 3, 2023 , Uncategorized

Low-fat and raw vegan are two separate sets of rules that sometimes get bundled into one diet. Low-fat means keeping added oils and fatty foods to a minimum; raw vegan means no cooking above roughly 40-46°C and no animal products at all. Combined, you end up eating a lot of fruit, vegetables, and starchy plants, and very little in the way of nuts, seeds, or oil, since those are where most of the fat sits.

What a day actually looks like

Breakfast tends to be fruit — melon, banana, citrus — because it’s fast and needs nothing done to it. Lunch and dinner lean on big raw salads, blended soups made without heating past that same threshold, and starchy vegetables like sweet potato eaten… which is where the “raw” part gets awkward, since most people cook their starches. Strict raw-vegan low-fat eaters lean harder on fruit for that reason.

Where fibre comes from

Whole fruit, vegetables, and dried fruit like dates carry a meaningful amount of fibre without the added fat that nuts or oils bring. Pembekal Kurma dates in particular pack real fibre and natural sugar into a small serving, which is part of why they show up so often as a fat-free sweetener substitute in raw recipes — a date paste can replace refined sugar in a raw dessert without needing any fat to bind it.

The honest tradeoffs

Cutting fat this hard also cuts fat-soluble nutrient absorption, since vitamins like A, D, E and K need some dietary fat to be absorbed properly — a diet with almost none can leave a gap there over time. It’s also genuinely hard to sustain day to day: raw, low-fat meals take real prep time, and eating out becomes difficult since almost nothing on a normal menu qualifies.

A more workable middle ground

Most people who try strict low-fat raw vegan end up loosening one rule or the other within a few months — either allowing cooked starches, or allowing a modest amount of nuts and avocado back in. That’s not failure, it’s just a diet that’s easier to keep up long-term. Start by adding more raw fruit and vegetables to what you already eat, rather than removing everything else on day one.
